Dyson AirStrait Review 2024: From a Non-Beauty Blogger

I work hard to get straight hair. That means a lot of heat, styling, and damage. When Dyson introduced the AirStrait in May of 2023 and I learned it can take my thick hair from wet to straight in under 15 minutes, I didn’t wait long before purchasing one.

Yes, it’s a splurge, but after using it for a while, I can assure you it is worth the price tag. Today, I’m sharing ten reasons why I think the AirStrait is worth buying.

Dyson AirStrait Straightener Benefits:

  • It dries and straightens your hair simultaneously, eliminating the need for a separate hair dryer and straightener.
  • No hot plates which damage your hair.
  • Technology to prevent breakage and split ends.
  • You can use it on virtually any type of hair, wet or dry.

And, if you’ve been following this blog for a while, you know I tend not to make impulse purchases. Before I got the Dyson AirWrap, I agonized over the decision for at least two years before finally buying it refurbished. But this time, I didn’t want to wait.

10 Reasons to Switch to the AirStrait

1. Wet-to-Dry

This is the biggest reason to switch from your traditional tried-and-true hair tools. The AirStrait uses air force to dry and style your hair at once, significantly reducing styling time.

2. Time Efficiency

Since you’re using just one tool that dries and straightens your hair, you cut down on your styling time significantly. I can get ready in under 15 minutes when it used to take me at least three times as long.

3. No Hot Plates

Since the plates themselves don’t get hot, you’re straightening your hair with air. It uses Air Multiplier Technology and has a bladeless design that stays cool to the touch. Its patented intelligent heat control adjusts air flow temperature up to 30 times per second through glass bead thermistors located in the machine arms. The highest temperature is 320 degrees (only on boost mode for dry hair), much lower than most flat irons. On wet hair, you’ll style it at either 230 or 285 degrees Fahrenheit.

4. Healthier Hair

The Dyson AirStrait not only offers immediate styling benefits, but also contributes to the long-term health of your hair. Its innovative technology ensures minimal heat damage compared to traditional styling tools, meaning less breakage, reduced split ends, and overall healthier hair with continued use. This is especially beneficial for those who style their hair frequently and subject their hair follicles to extreme heat damage.

5. Ease of Use

There is no learning curve. It has straightforward settings for wet and dry hair styling, even for younger users. My 9-year-old niece and tween daughter used it with no instruction. I don’t worry that they would burn themselves or fry their hair.

6. Versatility

The AirStrait works on wet or dry hair, or you can use it for quick touch-up throughout the day. It also can be used on different hair types, from those with thin, think, wavy, curly, short, or long hair.

7. Easy Maintenance

When you turn the Dyson AirStrait on, it goes through its cleaning mode. The bladeless design also makes the Dyson Airstrait easy to clean and maintain. There are no crevices or corners where hair or product can get trapped. You can easily wipe it down with a damp cloth.

Like the AirWrap, there’s a removable filter to trap stray hairs. Clean that occasionally.

8. All-in-One Tool

This wet-to-dry straightening tool has replaced my hair dryer and flat iron. I’m considering getting rid of them. If you have limited storage in your bathroom like I do, you may want to consider it for this reason, too.

They even sell a stand if you want to display it. It’s also very travel-friendly as you only need to bring one hot tool with you on a trip and in your luggage.

9. Safety Features

A few safety features worth mentioning include auto-pause, intuitive airflow, and energy-saving modes.

  • Auto-Pause: If you stop using the AirStrait for a few seconds, it automatically pauses and starts up again instantly when you’re ready.
  • Intuitive Airflow: lowers the heat when your hair is not between the arms.
  • Energy Saving Mode and Auto Shut-Off: When you put it down, you never have to worry if you accidentally left it on when away from home.
  • Rubber Mat: A place to rest your AirStrait on while not using it.

10. Salon Quality Results

Since I’ve gotten the Dyson AirStrait, I no longer go for blow outs. Where I live this can cost $55 and up. So even though the AirStrait is initially a big splurge, I feel over time it pays for itself. My hair often comes out better at home than at the salon. Although I love the Dyson AirWrap, I prefer the sleek style I get from the AirStrait.

How to Use the Dyson AirStrait

Settings

There’s much less of a learning curve with the AirStrait than the AirWrap. Designed for multi-purpose uses, the AirStrait has multiple heat and fan settings:

  • wet hair
  • dry hair
  • cool mode
  • airflow temperature settings, including boost for dry hair
  • fan speed: low or high

As a Hair Dryer

It’s best to start with towel-dried hair and then dry your roots. Instead of a regular hair dryer, you can actually use the AirStrait as a blow dryer. There’s a lock feature on the machine arms to make the air blow out to dry your roots.

It isn’t intuitive and I didn’t realize it had this feature the first time I used it. But it does a pretty good job at drying your hair.

On Wet Hair

Press the button on the LCD screen to activate wet mode and choose your desired temperature. You have three choices: 175, 230, and 285 degrees Fahrenheit. To lock in the look, you can switch to cool mode.

On Dry Hair

I only wash my hair two to three times per week maximum, so having a flat iron that won’t damage my hair is essential. Even if I go to bed with sleek and tame hair, I wake up with unflattering wavy hair sticking out in all directions.

I use dry mode daily. I’m not exaggerating when I say that I can get my hair sleek, shiny, and straight in under two minutes. And my hair never feels unhealthy. On dry hair, you can adjust the temperature to either 250 or 285 degrees Fahrenheit.

My Hairstyling Routine before the AirStrait

Before the Airstrait, straightening my thick, shoulder-length hair was a lengthy process that I dreaded. I used to rely on a blowdryer and brush for drying and a traditional straightener for styling.

Occasionally, I used the Dyson AirWrap’s brush attachment, which added unwanted volume, or the Revlon One-Step Volumizing Brush, known for its high heat output. These methods, especially the Chi flat iron at 410 degrees Fahrenheit, exposed my hair to intense heat.

Despite using heat protectant sprays, damage was a concern, and the whole procedure took about 45 minutes. The Airstrait, in contrast, streamlines this process while being gentler on my hair.

Plus, the entire process takes me close to 45 minutes.

My Personal Experience Using the AirStrait

I have been using the Dyson Airstrait for a while now, and it has become my go-to hair straightener on both wet and dry hair. I use it daily and have not noticed any damage to my hair. On the contrary, my hair feels soft and healthier.

Both my daughter and I have similar hair, naturally wavy, frizzy hair, that takes a long amount of time to style. The process is so efficient now:

  • I start by washing and towel-drying my hair.
  • I dry my roots with the AirStrait and then clip my hair into 1 to 2-inch sections.
  • I choose the fan and heat settings, typically high air and at 230 degrees.
  • I take a section of hair and place it between the plates of the Airstrait. I close the plates and slowly glide the Airstrait down the length of my hair.

The best part is how much time it saves me. I can get my entire head from wet hair to dry in under 15 minutes and from dry to straight in about 90 seconds to 2 minutes. My hair is sleek, shiny, and frizz-free. I find myself running my hand through my smooth hair, not believing I achieved these results myself.

I feel more confident, look more polished, and love the soft feel of my hair ever since switching to the AirStrait.

AirStrait vs. AirWrap

I joke to my husband that the AirWrap is the best thing that ever happened to me. But now I’ve corrected myself, still much to his chagrin. The AirStrait is actually the best thing to ever happen to me.

I love both tools and of course my husband.

The AirWrap does more as it comes with an array of styling tools including curling wands. But, if you want straight hair, the AirStrait does a better job and it’s quicker. Individual results are based upon your hair type. For me, I have thick, coarse hair. the AirStrait gets it sleeker and flatter, but not without body. With the AirStrait, I still have too much volume for my liking but I do love those waves it gives me.

AirStrait vs. Dyson Corrale Straightener

The Dyson Corrale works as a traditional flat iron, albeit with less damage to your hair. The biggest difference between the two products is that the Dyson Corrale can only be used on dry hair, while the AirStrait works on either dry or wet hair.

Since they’re at a similar price point, to me, it’s a no brainer. Go with the AirStrait.

Cons of Buying the AirStrait

I’ve laid out all the benefits but there are some drawback to the AirStrait:

  • High Cost: The Dyson AirStrait is a premium product with a price tag to match, making it a significant investment compared to standard hair straighteners.
  • Weight and Size: Some users may find the tool bulkier or heavier than traditional straighteners, which could impact ease of use, especially for longer styling sessions.
  • Limited Styling Options: While excellent for straightening, you’ll need additional styling tools to create curls or waves.
