Layering is your best friend during these unpredictable autumn days. It’s the comfy, easy solution that lets you add or shed layers as the day goes on.
The beauty of these pieces? They’re total team players. Rock them solo or pile them on together for a snug, stylish look.
Take layering tees and tops, for instance. They’re the base of your fall wardrobe, ready to slide under a flannel or a sherpa vest, making every outfit just a bit cozier and a whole lot more versatile.

1. The Shacket
For the last couple of years, a Shacket has been synonymous with crisp fall days.
What is a Shacket you ask? A shacket is a combination of a flannel shirt and jacket.
Often sporting a plaid pattern, it may look like your classic college-staple flannel at first glance, but it brings the added warmth and structure of a jacket.
A shacket is thicker than a traditional flannel shirt. It’s often worn oversized with a relaxed fit.
How to style a Shacket:
- worn loosely and open over a T-shirt, tank, or bodysuit
- buttoned up like a shirt
- tied in front
- tied around your waist

2. Layering Tees and Tops
As autumn weather can be unpredictable, layering tees and tops allow you to add or remove layers as needed. Start the morning with a tee under a sweater and a jacket, and as the day warms, shed layers to stay comfortable.
Whether it’s a classic long-sleeve tee, a comfy thermal, or a chic turtleneck, these pieces come in endless styles. I recommend starting your collection with neutral colors like cream, white, gray, or black.
These tops are typically made from soft, breathable materials like cotton or a blend, making them super comfortable for all-day wear.
Basic T-shirts
A solid T can effortlessly serve as the foundation of a casual outfit with jeans and sneakers, or be dressed up under a blazer with some statement jewelry for a night out.
Long Sleeve Crewneck T-shirt
Recently, someone in my local mom Facebook group asked for the best long sleeves shirts for fall. This crewneck T-shirt by Amazon Essentials was recommended again and again.
It comes in tons of neutral colors. You can wear it alone or layer it with many of the pieces in this article. It’s one of my best Amazon fashion finds.

3. Sherpa Vest
My favorite items right now are made of fleece or sherpa.
I think I can live in this sherpa vest right now. Wear it as a light cover-up on mildly cool days or layer with heavier clothes and coats on cool days. It runs true to size with an oversized fit.
It’s comfortable, warm, and has deep pockets. You’ll find yourself wearing it all the time as I do, even around the house, as loungewear. I also love the look of this vest.

4. Oversized Scarf
I’m a huge fan of scarves that can pull double duty as a blanket, possibly because I spend a lot of time cheering at my son’s sporting events, often in the cold.
This scarf is perfect for wrapping around your neck, draping over your shoulders as a shawl, or giving it a stylish tie. And at an impressive 79 inches long, it’s got plenty of cozy coverage!

5. Jeggings
One thing I miss about not being pregnant was the elastic waist of pull-on maternity jeans. And after the last couple of years of wearing mainly yoga pants at home, it’s hard to go back to regular pants.
I bought two pairs of denim jeggings last fall and they are beyond comfortable. No button digging into me, no feeling constricted on bloated days, these jeans just fit (and flatter!)
Both come in short and long-inseams if you’re on the petite or taller side, and in lots of different denim washes and colors.
Only the Levi’s has functional front pockets, but both have back pockets.
6. Booties
I’ve been eyeing the Doc Martens boots for some time. Instead, I bought these bestselling Chelsea boots, at a third of the price.
In case you’re wondering, a Chelsea boot is a chunky leather ankle boot with elastic-side panels.
I got them in my regular size, 8.5. They look great with anything from a sweater dress to a t-shirt and jeans. Wear them with any fall outfit shown here or with your winter wardrobe.
Wedge Sneaker
Back in the early aughts, I had a pair of heeled sneakers. It seemed like everyone had a pair. (I even found a pair in my boyfriend’s, now husband’s, closet left by his ex-girlfriend. I digress).
Anyway, I was super excited to get this pair of modern wedge sneakers.
It comes in lots of different colors. My daughter tried to convince me to get the white sneakers. I thought I was getting a neutral brown, not pink with a bit of bling.
I decided to keep them anyway. The first time I wore them, I walked around the Mall of America for a couple of hours to break them and wow, are they comfortable.
They do have more neutral colors, with or without sparkle. And honestly, you can’t go wrong at this price point. Plus, they get rave reviews.
Slouchy Crew Socks
These are my new favorite socks. Perfect with boots or slouched down, they’re cushioned and comfortable. I’ve worn these a ton with my booties.
7. Cross-Body Bag
This handbag is completely my aesthetic and I had the hardest time deciding which color to buy. Over 70 percent of its reviews are five-star reviews.
I really appreciate the adjustable straps on this bag—it’s so convenient to switch between wearing it on my shoulder or across my body.
The two large lined pockets are perfect for my daily items, and the small zipper compartments are great for keeping everything organized. And the faux leather? It’s stunning in every color, and the gold hardware is a classy touch.

Belt Bag
I originally bought this belt bag for a girls’ weekend. I thought it could hold my boarding pass and essentials at the airport and be convenient for walking around town. I didn’t realize that this bag would become my go-to bag and wallet.
This is one of my great finds of the last year and I have been using it consistently for over a year.
Then I discovered Lululemon’s fleece version and I had to have it. The problem so does everyone else and it’s consistently sold out.
While I waited for mine to arrive, I ordered a similar one from Amazon in brown. It looks great with every outfit, either alone or over a denim jacket or coat.
8. Hat
Living in the Midwest, where winter seems to stretch on forever, I find myself reaching for a warm hat almost half the year.
While beanies are my go-to for their snug fit and cozy comfort, I recently discovered the charm of a wool fedora. Not only does it keep me toasty, but it also adds a chic, polished touch to any outfit, effortlessly transforming my look even on the coldest days.
9. Sunglasses
I don’t know about you but I wear sunglasses all year long. One of my favorite brands is Sojos. They look much more expensive and are of good quality. These shades are both classic and trendy.

10. Earrings
No ensemble is complete without a pair of dangly earrings. All of these earrings can from daytime looks through nighttime.
Here are my picks:
- Leaf earrings: these earrings are large but lightweight. I can’t wear heavy earrings for longer than an hour.
- Twelve box set: I thought I might wear a few of these earrings, but most of them will be in my regular rotation. You can’t beat the price for all of them. They seem extremely shiny while in the box, however, once you put them on, they look great. I get compliments all the time.
- Boho green leaf earrings: what can I say, they’re gorgeous.
- Pressed flowers: choose your favorite petal combinations.
Final Thoughts
While you may think of colder weather outfits consisting solely of cozy sweaters, I didn’t feature any in this article.
