You Can Buy a Peloton at Dick’s Sporting Goods

Peloton is no longer a direct-to-consumer product. This summer, Peloton began selling some of its products on Amazon. Peloton will now sell a larger inventory of its products at Dick’s Sporting Goods.

All these changes have taken place under the leadership of new Peloton CEO Barry McCarthy.

When Will Peloton Products be Available at Dick’s Sporting Goods?

Their goal is to have Peloton products in more than 100 Dick’s brick-and-mortar retail locations by the holiday season.

Which Peloton Products Can You Buy at Dick’s Sporting Goods?

Peloton Bikes

Dick’s will sell both the original Peloton Bike, and the Bike Plus at Dick’s. Peloton currently does not sell its Bike Plus on Amazon but it’s possible they will add it to their storefront now that they sell it at Dick’s.

Peloton Row

They have no plans to sell their newest piece of equipment, the Peloton Row, at Dick’s.

Peloton Tread

You will be able to buy the Peloton Tread (not the Tread Plus which is still recalled) at Dick’s.

Peloton Guide

Yes, you can buy the Guide at Dick’s. (Check out my review of the Peloton Guide here).

Accessories

They will sell select accessories. Perhaps that would include weights, mats, and heart rate monitors,. (I prefer using my Apple Watch).

It definitely makes sense that you can buy Peloton shoes at Dick’s.

Peloton Apparel

While their press release doesn’t mention clothing or fashion accessories, I think it’s possible that Dick’s could sell a limited inventory of Peloton’s most popular or seasonal items.

This could also be more exposure for Peloton’s brand collaborations like they had with Adidas.

Benefits of Buying Peloton Products at Dick’s Sporting Goods

See and Try Out a Bike in Person

For many Americans, there is no nearby Peloton store. Some need to travel hours to find one. Peloton has less than 100 stores.

In August 2022, Peloton announced the closure of 86 stores and layoffs of more than 800 employees. There are nearly 800 Dick’s Sporting Goods stores across the United States. This gives Americans more of a chance to actually see and test out a Peloton bike and treadmill than ever before.

So for some, this is their first look at a Peloton bike. This could be the tipping point that pushes the sale.

Ability to Compare Competitor’s Bikes

Dick’s has carried an array of popular spin bikes and treadmills in its stores and online for years.

I can imagine they would place the Peloton near some of its bestselling indoor cycling bikes including the NordicTrack.

In fact, I mention many of them including the Schwinn IC4 in this article “The Best Spin Bikes for Every Budget.”

Seeing and sitting on various spin bikes at different price points alongside one another in a store can help someone make an educated decision.

Ability to Compare Competitor’s Treadmills

And, Dick’s would certainly display the Peloton Tread near alternative treadmills. I currently use this Horizon Treadmill which I review here in this blog post.

Reward Points

You can collect and use reward points at Dick’s Sporting Goods. You can also save by signing up for text alerts and other promotions.

Curbside Pickup

If a Peloton bike or other items are in stock at a Dick’s Sporting Goods near you, take advantage of curbside pickup.

No Sweat Protection Plan

Dick’s offers its own warranty program for as little as $3.99 per month. They already cover cardio equipment. You can read about the plan here but here are the highlights:

• they “fix it, replace it, or reimburse you“
• covers mechanical and electrical breakdowns
• and breakdowns due to normal wear and tear (coverage starts after manufacturer’s warranty expires)
• transferable (great if you plan on selling your Peloton)
• No Lemon Policy – they’ll replace or reimburse you if the bike needs more than 3 repairs of the same defect

This last point is especially important. There are tons of complaints on the Official Peloton Members Facebook Page by frustrated customers needing to have their bikes serviced for repeated issues.

Additional Warranty Coverage

Dick’s Sporting Goods also offers annual preventative maintenance for cardio equipment performed by authorized technicians (where applicable).

Dick’s Customer Service

You can get help with a product, return, or order by telephone or using its online chat.

Plus, you’ll be dealing with Dick’s for scheduling delivery. My bike was delivered by Peloton directly and I had no issues. But XPO handles a lot of the deliveries and it doesn’t always go so smoothly.

Returns

Typically, Dick’s does not allow returns of bicycles. But it seems that most other products include a 90-day return policy.

Will Dick’s Assemble the Peloton Bike and Tread?

Like Amazon, Dick’s will probably offer two options: DIY self-assembly or having someone assemble it for you.

Dick’s Sell Peloton Products at Going, Going, Gone?

Going, Going, Gone is a new addition to the Dick’s Sporting Goods franchise. Shoppers can save big by buying overstock inventory sent over from Dick’s.

While it’s unlikely that we will see any Peloton equipment at Going, Going, Gone, you may be able to find some Peloton clothes (similar to the sales you find in the Peloton boutique).

Will Selling at Dick’s Sporting Goods Dilute the Peloton Brand?

I’ve been a Peloton fan for years. I started back in 2016 using the Peloton App.

Over the years, Peloton has evolved from a spin bike company to an All-Access fitness company with yoga classes, strength classes, outdoor runs and walks, meditation, bootcamp, and treadmill classes. And I bet there are some classes you never even knew Peloton offered.

That said, I’ve also witnessed John Foley’s original vision of the company to one that went public, and a company now struggling. (I’m a Peloton stockholder as well so I have more than a slight interest in Peloton’s success).

In my opinion, there is no reason that Peloton should not be sold in retail stores. You can buy lots of other high end fitness products at stores or online, like the Mirror at Lululemon, the Hydrow at Best Buy, or the Tonal at Nordstrom.

Some may see this as diluting but to me, this all seems like a smart business move.
