What is Daily Harvest?

Daily Harvest began when entrepreneur Rachel Drori began making her own smoothies back in 2015. She soon developed a celebrity following and branched out into making healthy meals including harvest bowls, oat bowls, forager bowls, chia bowls, healthy bakes, flatbreads, and frozen bites.

So far, I’ve received three orders of Daily Harvest food (thank you, Daily Harvest).

On the day of delivery, you receive an email reminder. The food arrives in a large box packed with dry ice and the contents always intact.

Once you receive your order, you want to place all of the items into the freezer. You can store the smoothies in the freezer for 3 months.

How to Prepare a Daily Harvest Smoothie

Preparing a Daily Harvest smoothie couldn’t be easier. Just remove the plastic covering. Add your liquid of choice to the fill line (almond milk, water, coconut water, oat milk, pea milk, etc.). Daily Harvest often gives suggestions of good pairings on the packaging.

Empty the cup into a blender and blend until smooth. Then pour everything back into the cup. Put the plastic lid on and insert a straw through the opening.

How to Customize Your Daily Harvest Smoothie

You can always add extra ingredients to your smoothie. Add extra fruits or veggies, add some sweetener, or add some protein powder for extra protein. You can even add coffee or tea for a burst of caffeine.

Remember, you can keep frozen foods in the freezer for weeks so stocking up is a great option if you want to save.

Shipping

You get free shipping on your first box. After that, it’s $9.99 per order.

Daily Harvest Smoothies vs. Splendid Spoon Smoothies

Both are meal delivery services but there are some differences between the two companies. I have been ordering from Splendid Spoon for years and by now, have probably tried out all their flavors.

  • Packaging: Splendid Spoon smoothies come pre-made in bottles while you need to blend your Daily Harvest smoothie and add your own liquid. Splendid Spoon offers meals in 7, 14, or 21 meals while Daily Harvest sells in 9, 14, or 24 meals.Splendid Spoon’s best plan comes out to $9.97 a meal (for 21 items) with free shipping while Daily Harvest’s best plan comes out to $9.26 a meal (for 24 smoothies) with the shipping factored in and the $25 discount.
  • Price: You can order only smoothies from either company. A Daily Harvest 10-pack of smoothies would cost you $89.89 including shipping and the $5 discount. Splendid Spoon has a Plant Protein Smoothie 10-pack for $100.
  • Customization: Daily Harvest smoothies are meant to be customized by adding liquids and other ingredients while it’s more difficult to customize a Splendid Spoon smoothie as it’s already blended.
  • Protein: Daily Harvest offer higher protein smoothies, up to 19g vs Splendid Spoon whose greatest protein count clocks in at 11g (the Coffee Frappe Smoothie)
  • Flavors: Daily Harvest has more flavors of smoothies than Splendid Spoon, 25 vs. 15.
  • Serving Size: Daily Harvest smoothies are one serving per package vs. Splendid Spoon smoothies which are actually two per bottle.
    • Daily Harvest smoothies are 16oz servings while Splendid Spoon smoothies come in 16 ounce bottles but are 8 ounce servings
  • Calories: Daily Harvest smoothies’ calorie count may go up as you add ingredients while Splendid Spoon smoothies are complete calorie counts.
    • The lowest amount of calories in a Splendid Spoon smoothie is in the Carrot Ginger smoothie. Although it says it’s only 85 calories, it’s actually 170 if you drank the whole bottle. Meanwhile, there are several Daily Harvest smoothies that are only 120 calories (for example, Dragon Fruit & Lime)
  • Sugar: Neither smoothie company uses added sugars.
  • Convenience: Splendid Spoon is more convenient as the contents are already blended while it takes a few minutes to get the desired consistency of a Daily Harvest smoothie.
  • Consistency: Splendid Spoon smoothies are smoother while Daily Harvest smoothies may still have some chunks or fruit pieces.
  • Taste: This is personal. In my opinion, the Daily Harvest smoothies have a more interesting flavor and are less chalkier.

Is Daily Harvest Good for Weight Loss?

Obviously, this answer hinges on so many things: diet, age, health conditions, and activity level. But yes, Daily Spoon smoothies are fairly low calorie and if used as a meal replacement, as part of a regularly balanced diet, you could potentially lose weight.

Pros and Cons of Buying Daily Harvest Smoothies

Daily Harvest smoothies offer a convenient and nutritious option for many, but it may not be the best choice for everyone.

Pros

Convenient: The smoothies come in pre-portioned convenient cups with all ingredients frozen and ready to blend, making it quick and easy.

Variety of Ingredients: Daily Harvest focuses on using whole, unprocessed organic smoothie ingredients that are rich in nutrients but also uses interesting ingredients that you may not ordinarily buy or even think to include.

Customizable: You can add your own liquids and ingredients to tailor the taste to your liking.

Sustainable Packaging: The company has made efforts to use recyclable and sustainable packaging. Some of Daily Harvest’s packaging and containers are recyclable. In general, the Smoothie cups are not, although the lids are.

Subscription Model: The subscription model allows for regular deliveries, ensuring you always have a stock of smoothies on hand.

Cons

Price: Daily Harvest smoothies to be on the pricier side compared to making smoothies from scratch, however it’s unlikely you’d have so many ingredients ready to go.

Taste Preferences: You may need to add sweeteners or protein powder to find your perfect smoothie combination.

Subscription Model: Not everyone wants a subscription model.

Storage: Since the smoothies are delivered frozen, you need to have enough freezer space to store them.

Final Thoughts

For me, the convenience of Daily Harvest outweighs the negatives.

Making my own smoothies can get kind of boring. I tend to buy big bags of frozen and fresh fruits and vegetables and stick to the same ingredients: almond milk or Ripple Milk, protein powder, flax seeds, chia seeds, some greens and berry blends.

Plus, it does get expensive buying frozen and fresh produce. And, it takes up a lot of room in my freezer to be able to make smoothies of different varieties. When I buy the larger bags of fruit, they clump together into solid clumps of ice, and I have to bang them against the counter just to break it down.

The best part of Daily Harvest for me is trying out new flavors and ingredients I’ve never had before like sacha inchi and camu camu powders
